ELIS, Elis. Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ 2 Assaria (26mm, 12.55 g, 12h). 126th Olympiad. Struck circa AD 125. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Legend in two lines within wreath. BCD Elis 314-5; BCD Peloponnesos 697-8; SNG Copenhagen 449; McClean 6677. VF, brown patina, a little rough.

From the D. Alighieri Collection.

Hadrian visited Elis early in 125, before the 126th Olympiad that took place later that summer. This coinage was probably struck then, perhaps to help defray the cost of maintaining the imperial entourage.
