208, Lot: 33. Estimate $2000.
Sold for $2103. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AV Stater (19mm, 8.40 g, 4h). Uncertain mint (Pella?). Helmeted head of Athena right / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; no apparent controls. Price -; Hersch, Additions -; Arena -. VF, reverse weak around the peripheries.

Stylistically this coin is unlike any of the other issues lacking control marks listed in Price. This cataloger sees a similarity between this coin and Price 505, thus the tentative attribution to Pella. Both have a similar treatment of the hair, with just two tightly curled locks extending from the bottom of the helmet, a detail unlike anything else illustrated in Price.
