SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.28 g, 4h). Dies signed by Eukleidas and Eu-. Struck circa 415-405 BC. Charioteer driving fast quadriga left; above, Nike flying right, crowning charioteer; EV below; in exergue, dolphin chasing fish to right / Head of Arethusa left; EV below neck, four dolphins around. Tudeer 31 (dies 11/21); SNG ANS 262; SNG Lloyd 1372; BMC 147; McClean 2708 (all from the same dies). VF. Both signatures visible.

Although both dies are signed EV, the style of the reverse die is nearly a match to those bearing Eukleidas’ full signature. The full and abbreviated reverses are also linked by obverse die matches. The engraver of the obverse die, however, remains uncertain; though he signed many dies paired with reverses of Eukleidas, he is always abbreviated as EV.
