KINGS of THRACE. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.22 g, 3h). Uranopolis mint(?). Struck circa 286-281 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; star on cone to inner left, Θ in exergue. Thompson -; Müller -; cf. Price 518-22 (for a similar use of these controls on Alexander tetradrachms at Uranopolis). Good VF. Interesting portrait style.
Though an unknown mint for Lysimachos, the star on cone motif figures heavily on coinage from Uranopolis. If this is indeed a reference to the Chalkidian city, it would most likely date from mid to late 280’s BC, corresponding to Lysimachos’ absorption of western Macedon into his kingdom.
