KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 BC. AV Stater (8.60 g, 1h). Kolophon mint. Struck circa 323-316 BC. Laureate head of Apollo right / Charioteer driving biga right; tripod below horses. Le Rider pl. 90, 16 and pl. 93, 26; Thompson, Philip 12; SNG ANS 309. Near EF. Rare.

The tripod symbol is known for issues at Amphipolis and Kolophon. The Amphipolis issues are all from the last Philip type staters struck there, and usually have a subsidiary letter, either a Φ or K. They also have a distinctive style quite unlike the present coin, with a thin head of Apollo, an exergue line on the reverse, and only one wheel of the chariot visible. In contrast, the style of this coin is very consistent with the issues at Kolophon, which feature both broad and thin heads of Apollo, no exergue line, and always show the second wheel of the chariot in proper perspective.
