KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (4.27 g, 3h). Lampsakos mint. Lifetime issue, struck circa 328/5-323 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; caduceus in left field, NA (or AN) monogram below throne. Price 1343 = ADM II 4 corr. (same dies [monogram off flan]). Good VF. Extremely rare, only the second example known, the other in the ANS.
Both Price and ADM cite the ANS specimen, but do not note the monogram below the throne as it is off the flan of that coin. Our coin, from the same dies, confirms the accurate reading. Thus, this drachm issue corresponds to the tetradrachms of Price 1344, rather than Price 1342.
