KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (3.93 g, 1h). Chios mint. Struck circa 290-275 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, monogram above grape bunch. Price 2319. EF, lustrous. Overstruck on a civic issue of Chios (cf. Mavrogordato 57).

The face and breast of the sphinx are clearly visible on the reverse in the field above Zeus’ arm.
