IONIA, Achaemenid Period. Uncertain satrap. Circa 350-333 BC. Æ 12mm (1.89 g, 6h). Persian king or hero in kneeling-running right, holding spear and bow / Two concentric squares, a line projecting out from one side of outer square. SNG Copenhagen -; SNG von Aulock 7810 (Memnon); SNG Tübingen 2754. Good VF, black patina.

From the D. Alighieri Collection.

From at least the early 1900s, this type has been traditionally assigned to Memnon of Rhodes, but there is no evidence to substantiate such a specific attribution. The style of the obverse links it to the “map” issues of the Achaemenid satraps in Ionia, which have been dated to circa 350-333 BC.
