Silver ring with with amethyst intaglio. Roman, 2nd-3rd centuries AD. Striated band inset with amethyst seal decorated with laureate head of Apollo. Ring size: 6 1/4 US, M British. Excellent condition.
Legend says that that an intoxicated Dionysos pursed a maiden named Amethystos. Desiring to remain chaste, she prayed to Artemis for protection and the goddess transformed her into a white stone. As an offering, Dionysos poured wine over the crystal, dyeing it purple.
