LAKONIA, Lakedaimon (Sparta). Circa 100-90/80 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.39 g, 3h). Laureate head of Herakles right / Amphora between piloi of the Dioskouroi; Λ-A across upper field, A-PI across lower; all within wreath. Grunauer group VIII, series 5, 19 (V12/R18); BCD Peloponnesos 856 (same obv. die). Good VF, toned.
Ex BCD Collection (not in LHS sale), purchased from Spink, January 1984.
For this series, Grunauer plates two examples, one each from her die combinations 19 and 21, supposedly only differentiated by their reverse dies (R18 and R20, respectively). However, an examination of the plates show that these two coins actually have the same reverse dies. Thus, her coin 21.1 must be moved to 19.4. It is unknown whether the other two coins for her die combination 21 (21.2 and 21.3) are also mistakenly cataloged.
