LAKONIA, Lakedaimon (Sparta). Circa 48-35 BC. Æ Hexachalkon (6.19 g, 12h). Bearded head of Lykourgos right; ΛYK-OYPΓOC around / Club with handle ending in kerykeion; Λ-A across upper field, monogram-I and monogram across lower field. Grunauer group XVII, series 5, 44a corr. (this coin, in supplement, p. 201); BCD Peloponnesos 906. VF, attractive red-brown patina.
Ex BCD Collection (not in LHS sale).
This coin is listed in the supplement of Grunauer’s book, but is mistakenly labeled as 44a, which would be in series 4. The correct label would be 45a, as the dies used for this coin precede the first die combination, 46, under her series 5.
