LAKONIA, Lakedaimon (Sparta). Circa 48-35 BC. Æ Hexachalkon (8.46 g, 7h). Bearded head of Lykourgos right; ΛYKOYPΓ[OC] behind / Club with handle ending in kerykeion; Λ-A across upper field, ΦI and monogram across lower field. Grunauer group XVII, series 7 var. (control marks); BCD Peloponnesos -. VF, rough brown patina. This variety unpublished in the standard references.
Ex BCD Collection (not in LHS sale).
On Grunauer’s series 7 there is an additional I next to the monogram on the reverse. Although the surface is rough on this coin, there is no trace of any mark next to the monogram. However, the overall style is very similar to other examples of her series 7, so it may be a die engraver’s error, or an unrecorded variety just preceding or following this series.
