Belonging to one of the oldest and most distinguished families of Rome, Martin V saw to the end of the Western Schism, which was a near-40 year split within the Catholic Church, during which time three men each claimed to be the true Pope. Though he was a man of uprightness and moderation, he was not seen as a particularly reforming Pope.
