A compromise candidate between France and the Holy Roman Empire, Innocent XII was elected after a five month stalemate. His first act was to abolish the practice of nepotism, further augmented by the prohibition from bequeathing anything such as estates and offices to any relative and limiting the number of relatives who could be elevated to the cardinalate to one.
