His pontificate lasting less than two years, Pius VIII suffered from poor health throughout his papacy. He published the Litteris altero abhinc, which sought to bless only those marriages in which a Catholic education was promised for the children. Also occurring during his papacy was the Catholic Emancipation Bill which allowed for Catholics to participate in Parliament and hold public offices.
