ITALY, Papal Bullae. John XXII (Jacques Arnaud d’Euse). 1316-1334. PB Bulla (38mm, 51.21 g, 12h). IOHA/NNЄS/· P P : XXII in three lines; all within linear-beaded border; (Ω above P P) / S PA S PE, bare heads of Sts. Paul and Peter, facing slightly right and left, respectively, each within beaded halo; cruciform scepter between; all within beaded-linear border. Serafini I 18 (same dies as bulla illustrated). Near EF, minor roughness. Well struck.

From the Luparello Collection.

The second Pope from Avignon and a native of Cahors, John XXII involved himself in the political and religious issues of many European countries, thus making him a very controversial figure. He was involved in an unpopular belief surrounding the Beatific Vision, arguing against the belief that those who are saved experience the understanding of God before the Last Judgment.
