Struck from Artistic Dies

211, Lot: 166. Estimate $300.
Sold for $600. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

SICILY, Syracuse. Hiketas II. 287-278 BC. Æ Litra (22mm, 10.42 g, 1h). Struck circa 283-279 BC. Laureate head of Zeus Hellanios left / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; to left, T above star. BAR issue 39; cf. CNS 157; SNG ANS -. Good VF, dark brown patina.

From the Paul H. Gerrie Collection.

CNS 157 has a T and star on the reverse, but also a bucranium behind the head of Zeus on the obverse. It is possible that the symbol is off the flan, but considering its placement on the illustrated specimens in CNS, it should still be at least partly visible.
