CELTIC, Northwest Gaul. Carnutes. Santonos. Circa 100-50 BC. AR Quinarius (1.93 g, 3h). Helmeted head left; SANTONO before / Horse advancing right; scroll above, pentagram below. D&T 3267 (same obv. die as illustration); Depeyrot,
NC V, 18.7 (this coin); CCCBM II 440. Good VF, toned.
From the Dr. William F. Blank Collection. Ex Leu 79 (31 October 2000), lot 57; Münzen und Medaillen 47 (30 November 1972), lot 227; Changarnier Collection.
As noted in the Leu sale, the common attribution of this type to the “Santones” is purely conjectural, based on the legend, which is also found on a few other issues. More recent catalogs place these coins under the Carnutes (see Depeyrot).
