LUCANIA, Metapontion. Circa 400-340 BC. AR Nomos (7.79 g, 12h). Head of Demeter left, hair bound by wide fillet; poppy behind / Barley ear of seven grains with leaf to right; grasshopper on leaf. Noe 468e = SNG Lockett 396 (this coin); HN Italy 1525; SNG ANS 354 (same dies); Jameson 278 (same dies). VF, attractive old collection toning, minor marks under tone, slight area of flatness in center of reverse. Overstruck on didrachm of Herakleia. A few letters from the undertype are noticeable above the grasshopper. Rare, one of 6 examples recorded by Noe.
