KINGS of THRACE. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.20 g, 12h). Uncertain mint. Struck circa 297/6-282/1 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; monogram to inner left, ΘE in exergue. Thompson -; Müller 316 var. (ΘE ligate); SNG Berry 407; Meydancikkale 2704-5. EF, lightly toned.
While both SNG Berry and Meydancikkale place this issue at Byzantion, Marinescu (pp. 25-6) doubts this attribution, noting a strong similarity in portrait style to certain Lampsakos issues. Similarly, Newell also saw a possibility of this issue being the sole lifetime issue at Byzantion, but was not convinced enough to place it there. In any event, there is a consensus that this is a lifetime issue.
