Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; monogram to inner left; ΘE in exergue. Thompson -; Müller 316 var. (ΘE ligate); SNG Berry 407 (same obv. die); Meydancikkale 2705 (same obv. die). Good VF.
Struck from the same obverse die as the following lot.
While both SNG Berry and Meydancikkale place this issue at Byzantion, Marinescu (pp. 25-6) doubts this attribution, noting a strong similarity in portrait style to certain Lampsakos issues. Similarly, Newell also saw a possibility of this issue being the sole lifetime issue at Byzantion, but was not convinced enough to place it there. In any event, there is a consensus that this is a lifetime issue.
