ISLANDS off ATTICA, Aegina. Circa 525/0-500 BC. AR Stater (11.96 g). "Proto-tortoise" – turtle with segmented shell; c/m on shell: female(?) head left within incuse circle / Quadripartite incuse square with sections of irregular trapezoidal form. Holloway, Archaic, group C (late), p. 17, i-m; Milbank -; Asyut group V; SNG Copenhagen -; BMC 16; SNG Berry 754. VF, lightly toned, slight granularity on obverse. Rare issue with a very rare countermark, apparently unpublished in studies or hoards of Aeginetan coinage.
