Henri de la Tour d’Auvergne was prince of the independent principality of Sedan, and is best known for his military prowess while serving under the French king Henry IV. A faithful adherent to the Huguenot cause, he was eventually made a maréchal de France. He was the father of Henri de la Tour d’Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, who Napoleon later called the greatest military leader in history.
