INDIA, Mughal Empire. Nur al-Din Muhammad Jahangir. 1605-1627. AV Mohur (10.89 g, 8h). Ahmadabad mint. Dated AH 1030, RY 15 (AD 1620/1). Name and titles of Jahangir; center line in cartouche / Mint formula, AH date, and RY; center line in cartouche. Wright 584; Hull 1418 var. (date and RY); KM 178.2. Near EF, lustrous. Very rare.


The coinage of Jahangir displays a wide variety of numismatic and artistic innovation. Among the mohurs struck for him is this example: a rare variety with calligraphy of fine style. A similar example, but dated RY 14, appeared in Triton VIII (lot 1622), where it realized $9500.
