222, Lot: 34. Estimate $100.
Sold for $525. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CARTHAGE, Second Punic War. Circa 220-215 BC. Æ 2 Shekels (23mm, 10.88 g, 12h). Wreathed head of Tanit left / Horse standing right, head left; pellet below, Punic “B” before. MAA -; SNG Copenhagen -. Good VF, green patina.

An odd coin that doesn’t fit into any of the groups published in MAA and SNG Copenhagen. The weight is too high to be part of the Shekel series (MAA 88, Cop. 305-323) and the double shekels have a double linear border on the reverse (MAA 86, Cop. 345-348), not a beaded border as this coin.
