Extremely Rare Leo III Follis

222, Lot: 480. Estimate $300.
Sold for $215. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Leo III the "Isaurian", with Constantine V. 717-741. Æ Follis (20mm, 2.96 g, 6h). Syracuse mint. Struck 720-722. Crowned facing busts of Leo, holding globus cruciger and akakia, and Constantine, holding akakia / Large M; monograms above and to right; SCL. DOC 53 (citing the Spahr coin); Spahr 317 var. (Constantine also holding globus cruciger); Anastasi 396A; SB 1529A (citing the Spahr coin). VF, rough green patina. Extremely rare, one of a handful of known specimens.

This coin varies in slight details from the Spahr specimen. The Spahr coin shows both emperors with akakiai and globus crucigers (although the akakiai are not noted in the description), but on this coin Constantine does not hold a globus cruciger. In addition, DOC described the details surrounding the M as remains of the undertype, while in reality they are the abbreviation of Constantine’s name, associated with Leo’s monogram above the M.
