An attempt to foster peaceful relations between the Khwarizmshahs of Persia and the Mongols went horribly wrong when a greedy Persian governor robbed and massacred a Mongol diplomatic mission. Jalal al-Din, the son of Shah Ala al-Din, held out at the end in Ghazna before fleeing to India in 1222.
