SICILY, Alaisa (Symmachy Coinage). Time of Timoleon , 344-336 BC. Æ Hemilitron (14.77 gm). PELWRI retrograde, head of Pelorias left, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace, hair bound in ampyx and sphendone decorated with a star / S-UMM-A-CI-KO-N, torch between two grain ears. SNG ANS -; Calciati II pg. 446, 13; Antikenmuseum Basel 274; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG Morcom -; Laffaille 113; Virzi 737-738. EF, choice black patina with only a few minor breaks on the reverse. Fantastic dies, the work of a master engraver. Extremely rare, the finest known specimen and the only recorded specimen with complete legends. ($7500)

Very few specimens of this important type have been publicly sold. None of the published examples have any of the obverse legend visible, and the head is usually identified as Sicily, based on a similar type with the head right (Calciati II pg. 444, 12).
