The son of Louis IX, Philippe III earned his nickname le hardi (the bold) on account of his abilities in combat and horsemanship, not in politics and charisma. Throughout his reign, he was dominated by those around him, the most famous being his uncle, Charles I d’Anjou, the king of Sicily.
