The grandson of René I d’Anjou, René II secretly allied with Louis IX, against Charles le Téméraire (the Rash), the duke of Bourgogne, when the latter began to establish garrisons in Lorraine shortly after René received the appanage. Driven from Nancy, René soon retook the city with an army of Swiss mercenaries later that year in 1476. He was averted, however, in his quest to gain the crown of the kingdom of Naples by Charles VIII.
