SICILY, Mercenaries? Circa 344-336 BC. Æ Litra (8.62 gm). Male head left, wearing pileus / Skylla left, holding club over left arm. SNG ANS 800 (Skylletium in Bruttium); Calciati III pg. 319, 1; SNG Copenhagen 1992 (Skylletium); SNG Morcom 878; Laffaille -; Virzi 457 (Skylletium). Near VF, brown patina. Appears to be overstruck on a Syracusan litra, Athena/Hippocamp (Calciati II pg. 87, 42), with a trace of the hippocamp's tail visible on the pileus. Rare. ($500)

Often attributed to Skylletium in Bruttium on the basis of the Skylla on the reverse, this type has been found in excavations in Locri and in north-central Sicily, and as is the case with this coin, is often times overstruck on a Syracusan litra.
