SYRIA, Seleukid Kings. Demetrios I. 162-150 BC. Æ 21mm (7.01 gm). Uncertain mint in Cilicia. Head of a dog left / BASILEWS right, ÐHMHTPIOY SWTHROS left, forepart of a griffin right; monogram below. SNG Spaer -; Houghton, CSE, 556 var. (monogram); SNG Copenhagen -; Laffaille, "Choix de Monnaies Grecques en Bronze," 178 = Laffaille 573 (this coin). Good VF, dark green, almost black patina, under some scattered earthen encrustation, a few minor adjustment marks. One of the finest known of the type. Very rare. ($2000)
