TROAS, Abydus. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ 18mm (2.54 g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Two stags’ heads back to back. SNG Copenhagen - (but cf. 55 for same rev.); SNG von Aulock -; BMC - (but cf. 64, pl. III, 5 of Severus Alexander). Fine, rough black patina.
BMC notes that the reverse type depicts two stags’ heads, which thus relates to Artemis whose cult was worshipped at Abydus. Other works (e.g., SNG Copenhagen) describe the reverse as depicting two bulls heads.
