SYRIA, Coele-Syria. Chalkis ad Libanon. Cleopatra VII of Egypt. 36-30 BC. Æ 17mm (4.82 g, 12h). Dated RY 21 (Egyptian) and 6 (Phoenician) of Cleopatra (32/1 BC). Diademed and draped bust right / Athena advancing left, holding shield and spear. Svoronos -; SNG Copenhagen -; RPC I 4773; Rouvier 439 (Berytos); HGC 9, 1453. Fine, earthen brown patina. Very rare.


Mark Antony illegitimately “bestowed” a number of territories in the east on Cleopatra, including Chalkis in 36 BC, which were added to her royal dominions. These coins of Chalkis were dated with both the Egyptian and Phoenician regnal years of Cleopatra.
