KINGS of THRACE. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 17.20 g, 2h). Pella mint. Struck circa 286/5-282/1 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; monogram in wreath to inner left, AP monogram in exergue. Thompson 250; Müller 304 var. (position of monogram in wreath). Good VF, toned.
The obverse dies used for this and the following coin bear a striking similarity in style to some dies used on tetradrachms at Amphipolis (see lots 186-9, and, especially, 191, above). A common model cannot be an explanation, as other obverse dies from the same issues as these are significantly different in style. Therefore, all of these must have been engraved by the same hand. Although dies and engravers are known to have been shared by mints in close proximity, it is possible that these issues may need to be reassigned to the same mint.
