KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios. 323-317 BC. AR Drachm (19mm, 4.26 g, 11h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Abydos mint. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; “horse leg” in left field, Ξ below throne. Price 1515; ADM II Series V, 91-5. EF. Well centered on an exceptionally broad flan.
Ex Lanz 144 (24 November 2008), lot 149.
As noted in the Lanz sale, this example clearly shows the object in the left field having a cloven hoof, and thus cannot be a depiction of a horse’s leg (as it is traditionally called), but rather the leg of a bovine or swine.
