EGYPT, Ptolemaic Kings. Ptolemy II. 285-246 BC. AR Tetradrachm (14.10 gm). Signed by the artist A. Circa 285-275 BC. Diademed bust of Ptolemy right, wearing aegis; A behind ear / PTOLEMAIOU BASILEWS, eagle standing left on thunderbolt; EY and monogram before. Svoronos 362 var. (Ð behind ear); SNG Copenhagen -. Attractive light toning, nice EF, very high relief portrait. Unique! ($3000)

Although the Ð engraver has long been known, the 'A' engraver has not previously been recorded. While Ð and A can appear similar, this example clearly shows an A. Perhaps this engraver was a gifted disciple of the Delta master.
