Sold for $9500. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Commodus. AD 177-192. AV Aureus (20mm, 7.16 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 184. Laureate head right, slight drapery / Commodus standing left, sacrificing over altar to left. RIC III 99b note (this coin); cf. MIR 18, 654-2/32 (short obv. legend, draped bust); Calicó 2367 var. (bust type). Good VF, a few tiny spots of encrustation. Extremely rare variety with slight drapery on bust, one of two known (see NAC 46, lot 608, for the other).

Ex H. Osborne O’Hagan Collection (Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 13 July 1908), lot 489.

RIC notes two varieties of this issue, one with a draped bust (RIC 99b), and one with slight drapery (RIC 99b note, citing this coin). Interestingly, MIR incorrectly discounts both types as not extant.
