Magnus Maximus. AD 383-388. AR Siliqua (17mm, 1.80 g, 12h). Treveri (Trier) mint, 1st officina. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Roma seated facing on throne, head left, holding globe and reversed spear; TRPS. RIC IX 84b.1; RSC 20†a. EF, toned.
From the Elliott-Kent Collection. Ex Spink 169 (15 July 2004), lot 171.
The obverse legend on the die that was used to strike this specimen was apparently re-engraved. It is likely that the die was originally used for siliquae of Theodosius I (RSC 56†a), and reworked to strike coins of Maximus once he secured Trier during his revolt.
