LAKONIA, Lakedaimon (Sparta). Under the Achaean League. Circa 175-168. Hemidrachm (Silver, 2.42 g 8). Laureate head of Zeus to right.
Rev. Achaean League monogram with ΛΑ above, ΜΕ below and the pilei of the Dioscouri to left and right; all within laurel wreath. Agrinion 468a (same obverse die). BCD Peloponnesos 849 (
this coin). Clerk 324. Very rare. Nicely toned and unusually well preserved for this rare issue, extremely fine.
From the BCD Collection, LHS 96, 8 May 2006, 849.
Since Lakedaimon was a very unwilling member of the Achaean League it is not surprising that her 2nd century issues are extremely rare. This is one of the finest known examples.
