Justin II, with Sophia. 565-578. Æ 1/2 Follis (18mm, 2.69 g, 12h). Rome mint(?). Justin, holding globus cruciger, and Sophia, holding cruciform scepter, seated facing on double throne / Large XX; cross above; ROM. DOC 206; MIB 95 (military mint); SB 404. Near VF, green patina.

From the Peter Lee Collection.

Hahn lists the Rome mint half folles of Justin II in his category of “Moneta Militarii Imitativa,” a series of bronzes of very similar style bearing the mint marks of Constantinople, Nicomedia, Cyzicus and other mints. The entire series, its place of minting and the reason for its issue, remains one of the great puzzles of Byzantine numismatics.
