Maximianus. First reign, AD 286-305. AR Argenteus (18mm, 3.17 g, 6h). Nicomedia(?) mint. Laureate head right / The four tetrarchs sacrificing before city enclosure with six turrets. RIC VI -; RSC -. VF, porous, flan crack.
This reverse type is not recorded from Nicomedia, only Trier, Rome and Ticinum. The style of the portrait though suggests that this may be a new type for Nicomedia. The portrait is in fairly high relief, much more so than normally seen from Rome or Ticinum. This cataloguer anticipated a campgate reverse before turning the coin over.
