COMMONWEALTH. 1649-1660. PB Halfgroat Token (18mm, 6.01 g, 12h). Coat-of-arms bearing St. George’s cross; all within wreath; SM below / Coats-of-arms bearing St. George’s cross and Irish harp; II (mark of value) above, M on St. George’s cross. Unpublished in the standard references. Good Fine.

Given that this piece was cast in a size and weight greatly in excess of any genuine halfgroat, it is unlikely that it was intended as a counterfeit. Although the piece may be a pattern for a halgroat, none of the letters on the reverse match the initials of any engravers active during the Commonwealth. An original function as a token or counter is much more probable.
