Edward was the son of Eadgar and his first wife, Aethelflaed. Upon his father's death he was crowned king. Some, however, including Queen Aelfthryth, Eadgar's second wife, supported his half-brother, Aethelred II. When on 18 March 978 Edward went to visit Aethelred and Aelfthryth, he was pulled from his horse and murdered by their supporters.
