Commercially well located, the Diocese of Cambrai roughly coincided with the shire of Brabant, and included the central region of the Low Countries. During the Middle Ages the city grew rich as a producer of woolen cloth, linen, and cambric. Cambrai was a member of the commercial Hanseatic League of seventeen cities of the Low Countries who developed trade with Champagne and Paris.
