Elected as a Knight of the Garter in 1653, William of Orange continued his political ascent in 1672 as he was appointed by Holland and Zealand to the ranks of Stadtholder, Captain, and Admiral-General. Though on peaceful terms with his wife’s family the Stuarts, William’s relationship with them would begin to deteriorate, culminating with the events of the Glorious Revolution in 1688.
