Following such events as the imprisonment and subsequent trial of the seven bishops, the Stuarts became increasingly unpopular within England. With the birth of James' son, James Francis Edward Stuart, his elder daughter Mary was displaced from the line of succession. Due to their protestant leanings, Mary and her husband William were sent a formal invitation to the crown by a group of important political figures, later known as the 'Immortal Seven.' Willing and able to accept this offer, William led an army into England, with James ultimately being forced into exile in France.
