SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. Æ Hemilitron (16mm, 4.00 g). Obverse die signed by E- (Euainetos?). Struck circa 410-405 BC. Head of Arethusa left, wearing necklace; E behind / Star of 16 rays within circular incuse within quadripartite incuse square. CNS 18; SNG ANS 394-7 var. (no E). Near VF, dark olive green patina.

The letters E or EY are commonly found on these issues with stars of 8 rays, but not on those of 16 rays. Nonetheless, the high quality of the dies used for these leads some to speculate that it is the signature of an engraver, particularly that of the famed Euainetos, who is best known for his dekadrachm and tetradrachm issues.
