Sold for $60. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS, Pantikapaion. Circa 304/3-250 BC. Æ (21mm, 7.06 g, 1h). Wreathed head of satyr left; large star countermark / Bow and arrow. MacDonald 116/1; SNG BM Black Sea 897. VF, brown patina, a little rough.

MacDonald argues that after the application of this countermark, coins without it were no longer considered legal tender. There are some examples of the countermark being engraved directly into the dies, as it became a necessary feature of the design for the coin to circulate legally.
