Vitellius. AD 69. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.52 g, 7h). Rome mint. Struck circa late April-20 December AD 69. [A] VITELLIVS GERMANICVS I[MP], bare head right / FIDES above, EXERCITVVM below, clasped right hands. RIC I 67; RSC 36; BMCRE 2; BN 33-4. Near EF, toned. Bold portrait. Very rare.
From the C.K. Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group XXIX (30 March 1994), lot 566.
One of the earliest issues of Vitellius, still using a portrait resembling Otho, this coin was probably struck before the die engraver knew what Vitellius looked like.
